COMMENT

During the period 2000 through 2012, US Government data document 130,522 people killed travelling in GM vehicles. This includes 2,641 child passengers seven years or younger. Almost none of these deaths have anything to do with technology, defective or otherwise. They reflect how drivers drive, which is determined mainly by public policy.

Why do we largely ignore the deaths of 130,000 people in GM vehicles, and instead expend enormous energy on 27? The GM number says nothing about the safety of GM vehicles - it reflects the number of vehicles on the roads and how they are driven. In the 2000-2012 period, more than half a million people died on the roads of our nation.

Why we largely ignore the enormous numbers of deaths on our roads is the focus of my AJPH editorial:

Twenty Thousand More Americans Killed Annually Because US Traffic-Safety Policy Rejects Science
